Prof. Rhon Manigault-Bryant presented two papers at the recent national meeting of the Popular Culture Association and American Culture Association (PCA/ACA) in Boston, MA from April 11-14, 2012.
She was a respondent to Susan H. Hill’s text Eating to Excess: The Meaning of Gluttony and the Fat Body in the Ancient World (Praeger 2011) and presented a paper entitled “‘The Church of Oprah” and the Rise of Sapphmammibel: Race-ing Fatness in Contemporary Culture,” which explored the relationship between formulations of fatness in popular culture and the historicized mammy figure.
